Writer Niren Bhatt Talks About Preparing for Vicky Kaushal's Mythological Epic Mahavatar

Niren Bhatt opens up about the intense preparation for Mahavatar, Vicky Kaushal’s mythological epic about Parashurama.

Writer Niren Bhatt recently gave fans a glimpse into the intense preparation for Vicky Kaushal’s much-awaited mythological epic Mahavatar. Speaking about the film, Bhatt revealed that it would be a significant departure from his previous work, particularly the action-packed Sky Force. While Sky Force focused on real-life military heroes, Mahavatar will tell the legendary story of Chiranjeevi Parashurama, a revered figure from Hindu mythology. Niren Bhatt, who has been working on the film’s script, explained that creating an authentic portrayal of Parashurama’s life comes with great responsibility, especially since the character is based on Lord Vishnu's sixth incarnation.

Niren Bhatt shared in a conversation with Mid-day that the story draws heavily from ancient scriptures, including the Bhagavata Purana, and other lesser-known texts. He noted that these texts, often used for religious ceremonies, are rarely read by the general public. In his efforts to get every detail right, Niren admitted that the research required for the film was vast and intense. To ensure authenticity, he read over 11 novels and ancient plays on Parashurama. Niren Bhatt stated that the worlds of Sky Force and Mahavatar are vastly different, making it necessary to approach the two films with distinct research methods.

The writer also emphasized how challenging it was to work on Sky Force, especially because the film tells the story of an Air Force officer who went missing in action. For this project, Bhatt and his team worked with an Indian Air Force pilot to ensure that the script accurately portrayed military life. He explained that films about the Armed Forces must be validated by experts to avoid errors, as they are tributes to real-life heroes. Bhatt’s attention to detail, such as understanding military jargon, body language, and conduct, was crucial to making the film as authentic as possible.

When discussing Mahavatar, Niren mentioned the added pressure of accurately portraying the divine figure of Parashurama. He said that his approach to the film would combine rigorous research with creative storytelling to bring the ancient myth to life on the big screen. The film, directed by Amar Kaushik, is expected to be a dramatic and visually spectacular take on one of India’s most significant mythological figures.

The film was announced in November 2024 and is slated for a release during Christmas 2026. Filming for Mahavatar is expected to begin sometime next year, and Vicky Kaushal is set to lead the cast. Fans are eagerly awaiting this collaboration, particularly due to Bhatt’s meticulous research and the film’s promising premise. The team is dedicated to making this mythological epic a rich, authentic, and captivating portrayal of Parashurama’s life, sure to resonate with audiences when it releases.
