Sarfira Review: A Gripping Story of Ambition & Challenges

Sarfira is an inspiring biopic that follows the journey of Vir Mhatre, a man determined to make his dream of creating a low-cost airline a reality. The film portrays his struggles against unethical, competitive airline owners who not only threaten his business but also the safety of his passengers.

Akshay Kumar delivers a splendid performance as Vir Mhatre, marking one of his best works. His portrayal is both powerful and heartfelt, making you root for his character throughout the film. Akshay’s ability to convey the emotional and physical challenges faced by Vir is commendable, and he truly brings the character to life.

Sudha Kongara, who directed the much-loved Tamil film Soorarai Pottru, narrates the story with the greatest amount of care. Her direction ensures that the film remains realistic and relatable, even with its big premise.

Paresh Rawal is terrific as the antagonist, delivering a performance that is quite menancing. His sequences with Akshay Kumar are fiery and intense, adding a layer of tension to the film. Paresh’s portrayal of a ruthless competitor who will stop at nothing to see Vir fail is very chilling.

Radhikka Madan plays Rani Mhatre, Vir’s wife, and does a commendable job. Her character showcases the personal sacrifices and emotional distress that come with Vir’s ambitious journey. However, there are moments where Radhikka’s performance feels a bit over the top.

Seema Biswas delivers a strong performance as Vir’s mother. Her portrayal of a supportive yet worried parent adds an emotional layer to the film.

The film does have its flaws. The background music is excellent, but the soundtrack could have been better. There are too many songs in the movie that aren’t necessary. The frequent musical interludes disrupt the flow of the story and feel out of place in an otherwise serious and intense film.

The runtime is also a bit long, and just when you feel the movie is starting to pick up pace, additional scenes with Vir’s wife slow it down. The film focuses heavily on the husband-wife relationship, which sometimes detracts from the main plot about Vir’s journey to create the airline. The constant switching between scenes of Vir’s professional struggles and his personal life can be annoying at some times. While the intention to showcase the balance between personal and professional life is understandable, the execution could have been smoother. 

Despite its flaws, Sarfira is a well-made biopic that showcases Akshay Kumar’s acting prowess and Sudha Kongara’s directorial skills. The film’s strengths lie in its performances and its ability to convey a powerful message about perseverance and the pursuit of dreams.
